What Factors Affect the Aging Process?

Updated: Dec 19, 2023

Everyone ages differently, yet many people strive to slow down the process as much as possible. While aging is unique to everyone, the following factors may affect the aging process:

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Genetics

  • Chronic illness and other comorbidities

  • Lifestyle factors

  • Mental health problems

  • Social factors

  • Environmental factors

If you have begun to develop health issues due to the aging process, certain anti-aging and regenerative therapies may help you restore your energy, strength, and hormonal balance. Our facility specializes in regenerative and metabolic medicine, so we can review your health condition to see which treatments are suitable for you.

Hormonal Imbalances Occur As People Age

At some point in the aging process, both men and women will begin to stop hormone production in their endocrine systems, which will cause hormonal imbalances. Depending on a person’s gender and genetic predisposition, their endocrine functions may stop or slow down anywhere between 30 and 50 years of age.

This process is called menopause for women, which means they will stop producing estrogen, progesterone, and some testosterone. This process is referred to as andropause for men, which means their testosterone and other androgen levels start dropping..

How Losing Endocrine Functions May Affect the Aging Process

Mayo Clinic Proceedings released a report about the hormonal and metabolic changes involved with aging, noting that when both genders begin to decrease their hormone production, they may:

  • Experience bone density loss

  • Lose sexual desire or experience sexual dysfunctions

  • Go through mood changes

  • Become anemic

  • Lose muscle mass

  • Fluctuate in their weight or gain weight

  • Experience hair loss or hair thinning

  • Become more susceptible to other chronic illnesses

Individuals who develop health problems due to hormonal imbalances may use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to treat their condition. Our facility offers HRT options for men and women, which we can explain in your first appointment.

Genetics Set the Foundation for What a Person’s Aging Process May Involve

Aging and Disease released a report that detailed how the aging process is affected by human senescence, which controls cellular response in the body based on genetic and environmental factors. In short, an individual’s genetic history can dictate:

  • Whether they have a predisposition to develop specific health conditions

  • Whether they are likely to live a long life

  • Whether they are likely to experience genetic mutations that result in premature aging

  • How their skin might change during the aging process

  • If they have any “segmental progerias,” which are syndromes that affect a person’s physiological aging

Still, while a person may have genetic predispositions to specific aging effects, they can counter negative symptoms through treatment and making healthy changes in their lifestyle, which the report supports.

Chronic Illness or Comorbidities Can Affect Overall Health and Aging Processes

According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), older adults are more likely to develop chronic conditions that affect their health, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and arthritis. However, younger adults who develop chronic conditions or diseases may also accelerate the aging process as a result.

Chronic illness can:

  • Weaken the immune system

  • Limit a person’s ability to engage in routine exercise

  • Affect a person’s health, causing significant stress or depression

  • Reduce a person’s physical strength, making them more susceptible to injury

  • Affect a person’s oral health, which can lead to tooth decay

Preventative Medicine also notes that chronic disease can develop from unhealthy habits or addiction involving long-term tobacco, alcohol, or illicit substance use. As such, those who develop substance use disorders may accelerate the aging process or shorten their lifespan.

Other Factors Can Affect How a Person Ages Over Time

Other factors that may affect the aging process include:

  • Lifestyle factors: People who participate in routine exercise and maintain a nutritional diet can improve their health, which can prolong a person’s lifespan and maintain healthy physiological features, per Maturitas. Conversely, individuals who have a sedentary or malnourished lifestyle may be more likely to become obese or develop conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

  • Mental health: People who are constantly under stress or who suffer from mental disorders may accelerate the aging process. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now emphasizes the importance of practicing good mental health. Mental illness can cause individuals to suffer from preventable diseases, weaken their autoimmune responses, and shorten their lifespans.

  • Social factors: The Hennepin County Aging Initiative shed light on research findings on how social factors like one’s income class, education, or race can affect the aging process. For example, people in low-income households are less likely to have access to health care, which can affect their aging process in that they will not receive the treatment they need.

  • Environmental factors: Certain environmental factors affect a person’s aging, such as the family household they were raised in, the pollution levels in the city they reside in, and the working conditions they’re exposed to.
