At What Age Do You Start Experiencing Low T?

Updated: Dec 19, 2023

Men can start experiencing low testosterone (T) levels in their 50s. Men start losing about one to two percent of testosterone per year once they hit their 30s, so by the time they hit their 50s and 60s, they may start experiencing signs of low T levels. However, even men in their 30s can suffer from low testosterone.

Other factors besides age can also cause your testosterone levels to drop. Whether you are experiencing low T levels at an early or older age, consider visiting a physician at our facility for a physical exam. Our facility offers testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) and other treatments that can help you improve your T levels. We can explain your options further after running some diagnostic exams.

What Causes Low Testosterone?

Many men start experiencing low T levels in their 50s, but even men under 30 can suffer from low testosterone. We offer TRT treatment. Get an appointment.

As men reach their middle age, they gradually begin losing testosterone each year (about one to two percent). However, certain health conditions—referred to as comorbidities—can also trigger men’s T levels to fall.

According to the Asian Journal of Andrology, these comorbidities include:

  • Obesity

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)

  • Hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol)

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Chronic kidney disease

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED)

  • Stress

  • Alcoholism

As a result, men who are older or live with a comorbidity may start to experience low T levels, which can lead to various side effects. Keep in mind that while some men might suffer from low testosterone once they are 50 or older, even men under 30 can also experience low T levels, according to Healthline. Recognizing the signs of low testosterone can help you get treatment faster and reduce its effects.

Can Women Experience Low Testosterone?

Yes. Women produce testosterone in their ovaries; however, they do not start to lose testosterone until they reach menopausal age (between 45 and 55).

Women experience testosterone loss differently since their levels are much lower than men. Still, they can receive hormone replacement therapy if their T levels are too low and are interfering with their health.

At our Port Oregon clinic, we adapt our anti-aging therapy and other regenerative services to the client. Our physicians will consider gender, age, lifestyle, and a series of other factors to prepare a personalized treatment plan for you.

What Are the Effects of Having Low Testosterone Levels?

Men who have low testosterone levels, also referred to as hypogonadism, may start to develop negative symptoms, such as:

  • Lower libido or sexual desire

  • Bone density loss

  • Loss of muscle and strength

  • Increase in bodily fat, particularly in the breast tissue

  • Difficulty getting or maintaining an erection and other erectile dysfunctions

  • Impotence

  • Changes in mood, including depression

  • Fatigue and lower energy overall

  • Lack of motivation

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Difficulty with maintaining concentration

  • Hair loss

  • Infertility

If you exhibit any of these signs, you can see one of our physicians at our facility. We can identify some of the key causes behind your low T levels and determine an appropriate treatment method for you.

Are There Treatments to Raise Your Testosterone Levels?

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is one method to help men boost their testosterone levels. This treatment transfers testosterone to the body to encourage natural production via:

  • Injections

  • Topical gels

  • Skin patches

  • Oral pills

Before you begin TRT, our facility will first conduct a physical exam and some bloodwork to measure your testosterone levels. Blood test times vary according to your age. Younger men tend to have higher testosterone levels in the morning, whereas men over 45 may show the same results up to the early afternoon.

Benefits Of Raising Your Testosterone

The benefits of using TRT to improve your testosterone levels include the following:

  • Increase in energy

  • Fat reduction and muscle growth

  • Increase in bone density

  • Increase in libido

  • Improvement in sexual performance

Certain treatments, such as shockwave therapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, may help to target specific symptoms of low T levels. For example, men suffering from hair loss may see improvement with hair growth after three to four PRP therapy sessions. Men experiencing erectile dysfunction (ED) may see improvement within two to three weeks from a shockwave therapy session.

Our physicians can create a treatment plan for you based on your health goals and needs. Should you have any questions about treatment risks and other details, our physicians can also explain this information to you during your appointment.
