Are Botox® Injectables Safe?

Updated: Dec 19, 2023

According to research from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Botox® injectables are safe and can be used for cosmetic and medical purposes. Some patients have reported mild side effects with its use, but these are rare and usually easily resolved. While Botox® injections are made up of a bacterium sometimes considered toxic, they are also considered relatively safe when a medical professional gives them in the correct dosages.

It is typically a simple, in-office treatment option with little downtime and largely mild side effects. At the time a health care provider treats you, they likely will caution you against putting pressure on the injection site. This includes rubbing or massaging the area as this could cause the bacteria in Botox® to spread.

What Side Effects Have Others Reported About Botox® Injectables?

FDA officials and many treatment providers have evaluated Botox® treatment. Mayo Clinic research, however, cites various potential side effects, most of which are mild. Patients have reported the following:

  • Injection site pain and swelling

  • Flu-like or asthma-like symptoms

  • Droopy eyelids or vision concerns

  • Hard-to-control drooling

Some side effects can be more serious but are rarely reported. You should report any of the following symptoms to your doctor immediately — muscle weakness and difficulty swallowing or breathing. Botox® injectables can include varying levels of ingredients based on the specific product used in your treatment. Treatment with an injectable like Dysport® is safe, but the medical procedure requires medical supervision and monitoring.

Will My Doctor Provide Follow-up Care After I Receive Botox® Treatment?

Absolutely. Your doctor will monitor your reaction before, during, and after receiving injections. You should receive the following post-treatment assistance from your health care facility:

  • Scheduling follow-up care

  • Determining treatment frequency

  • Addressing any side effects that concern you

Aftercare is an important part of effective health care. Because Botox® works by essentially paralyzing your muscles, your doctor will carefully monitor how it affects your health and appearance.

How Long Do Botox® Injections Take?

Botox® injections are given on a per unit basis. The number of units you will require can vary based on:

  • The purpose of your treatment

  • The site of the injections

  • Your overall health

For these reasons, the number of units required for follow-up treatments can also vary. In some patients, the muscles treated with Botox® learn to contract less, and treatment can last longer and require fewer follow-up injections. Treatment is not lengthy. It is usually relatively quick and provides long-lasting effects and benefits.

How Do I Prepare for Botox® Injectables?

When you are ready to receive treatment, inform your doctor of any medical conditions you have and the date of your last Botox® injection. All other pre-treatment needs will happen at your appointment.

The injections are typically pain-free. To ease any potential discomfort, your doctor may apply:

  • Topical numbing agents

  • Ice or cold packs

  • Anesthesia via vibration therapy

When the procedure begins, you will not feel more than a pinprick or sting from the initial needle. Injectables are made using a small, thin needle with the number of injections varying from patient to patient. Your health care team will monitor your comfort level throughout your treatment session.

How Soon Will I See Results After Receiving Botox® Injections?

Your results may vary from that of other Botox® patients. According to Cleveland Clinic statistics and research, initial results can become apparent as soon as three or four days after receiving treatment.

Most patients can expect to see optimal results between 10 days and two weeks. Your results can be expected to last for several months. Maintaining the results of your appearance or medical condition will require ongoing follow-up injections. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate treatment plan based on your specific needs and desired outcome.

Is Botox® Used Only for Cosmetic Purposes?

Botox® has many medicinal purposes. It can be used to treat and relieve the following medical conditions:

  • Cervical dystonia, which causes uncontrollable neck muscles contractions

  • Lazy eye, which causes an imbalance in the muscles of one eye

  • Hyperhidrosis, which causes excessive perspiration, even while immobile

  • Chronic migraine that persists for at least 15 days out of a one-month period

  • Bladder dysfunction, which can lead to a lack of bladder control and incontinence

Relieving these medical conditions can lead to an improved quality of life and an increase in social activities and self-confidence. Review your health care needs with your doctor to learn more about the improvements you can receive with Botox®.
